It’s hard to believe it is already mid-December. In some ways, the year has flown by and in other ways it feels like 2025 has been one of the longest years in recent memory. This has been a year marked by change, uncertainty, and tremendous stress across our region and the country.
With rising costs, limited housing options, and increasing need, the demand for affordable housing in our region is higher than ever, and the stakes for our community continue to grow.
Even in these tough times, our organization, partners, and supporters have pushed forward with determination to ensure more families can experience the comfort and security that so many of us cherish during the holidays.
The close of the year is a time that invites us all to pause and reflect. We are reminded of what truly matters: home, stability, and community. In the spirit of reflection that this time of year brings, below are a few reminders of WHC’s work this year and why it remains more vital than ever.
- In the Spring, with our partners Casey Trees and the American Institute of Architects, we had over 70 volunteers and planted more than 60 trees at Hamilton Manor in Prince George’s County. In the last two years, we have planted over 200 trees across the properties!
- In July, WHC welcomed three New Social Impact Coordinators to implement our mission of uplifting residents with our core strategies of community building, placemaking, economic mobility, and supporting inclusive property management at each of our communities. They immediately got to work and in a very short time, they have vital team members and are forming meaningful relationships with our residents.
- Over the Summer, I wrote an op-ed about the importance of TOPA reform and the RENTAL Act which was published in the Washington Business Journal. The op-ed was one piece of a significant effort by WHC to advocate for policies that would better address the housing affordability and scarcity crisis in the city.
- Given the difficult economic circumstances across the region, WHC has worked hard over the last four months to address some of the pressing needs many of our residents are facing. Our Social Impact Coordinators have been busy across our properties; in September we had a Back to School drive to provide much needed supplies to our young scholars. In November, WHC provided gift cards to help ensure everyone would have what they needed for Thanksgiving dinner. Finally, this month our Coordinators have completed toy giveaways so that our youngest residents have a happy holiday season.
As we enter the holiday season and look ahead to the new year, we are reminded that “home” is more than a place. It’s security, opportunity, and a foundation for belonging.
Your support helps make that possible for the families who live in a WHC community.
As you make your year-end contributions, I’d like to ask that you consider making a contribution to WHC. Whether large or small, your gift strengthens our ability to respond to this moment and positions us for impact in the year ahead. You can make your contribution here or through a check.
With your support of WHC and our mission, we step into the new year strengthened and ready to meet the growing needs of our region.
Wishing you and your loved ones a warm, restful holiday season and a bright start to the new year.
