DC area’s youngest residents are back to school this week. Every year, back to school heralds a return to hectic reality from the slower pace of summertime. No more pool days, back to school days.
While it’s hard to say goodbye to the freedom of summer, this is also an exhilarating time. There’s the potential for what is possible for the next year. It’s a time to get excited about learning and a time to meet new friends.
For the last few years, in the spirit of a new academic year and all the excitement it can bring, WHC has given school supplies to students in our communities. From pre-K to high school, we’ve supplied households with a backpack full of the necessities for a successful new year of learning. And with the current economic climate, going back to school with everything you need is more expensive than ever. Costs for households are up and can add strain to an already stressful time of year. According to an article in the Washington Post last week, most schools are asking parents to buy roughly $100 of supplies this year.
With our supplies support, WHC tries to help take some of the strain off our residents. This year, we are very appreciative of Amazon’s generous renewal of funding for the Back-to-School drives at our properties across the DMV. This year, we supplied over 240 elementary, middle and high school students with supplies. Also this year, we had a pop-up event, complete with supplies for 60 graduate students at our Crystal House community.
School supplies are about more than just crayons and pencils. It’s an opportunity for WHC, our property management partners and the whole community to come together to support our residents and their families. We held end of the summer events along with backpack distributions so neighbors could make connections before the start of school.
With supplies, supportive environment and safe, stable and affordable housing of a WHC community, we hope our students return to school full of confidence, excitement and focus, ready to take on a new academic year.
